Ranchi (Latehar), Jharkhand:Surendra Prasad Gupta, District President of the Jharkhand Journalists Association (JJA) and a correspondent for Dainik Bhaskar (Palamu edition), was the target of a deadly attack by three unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle in Balumath, Latehar district. The incident occurred on the night of August 27, 2025, as Gupta was returning to Balumath from Ranchi in his car (registration no. JH01 DD 0493).
*Gupta has filed a written complaint*
at the Balumath police station detailing the attack and alleging that he had been receiving continuous threats due to his journalistic work. According to him, the assailants arrived on a bike (registration no. JH12 J 0868), blocked his car, hurled abuses, and then violently attacked his vehicle. They tried to drag him out of the car and assault him, but he managed to escape into his old residence nearby. Alerted by the commotion, local residents gathered at the scene, which ultimately saved his life.
In his complaint, Gupta stated that the attack was orchestrated by individuals associated with the coal business, who had earlier threatened him for publishing reports against them in Dainik Bhaskar. “They had warned me to be ready to face consequences,” Gupta wrote, adding that he believes the same individuals were behind this planned attack.
*Demand for Investigation and Protection*
The Jharkhand Journalists Association has strongly condemned the attack and demanded a thorough investigation by the police. The state secretary of JJA, Rajeev Mishra, has appealed to authorities to ensure the safety of Surendra Gupta and take strict legal action against the culprits. "If the administration fails to act swiftly, it will become impossible for journalists to continue their work," Mishra warned.
JJA State President Sampurna Nand Bharti called the attack a cowardly act and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Meanwhile, the Latehar Press Club has also taken serious note of the incident. A delegation from the club is scheduled to visit Balumath on Thursday to meet with Surendra Gupta and discuss further course of action.
