“Sir, A Rat Ate My Notebook…” — Innocence of Little Suraj Moves Deputy Commissioner

Copies Distributed on the Spot; Orders Issued to Shift Classes and Expedite School Repairs

An emotional moment unfolded at Primary School, Regional Hospital Phusro when Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Ajay Nath Jha made an unscheduled visit during inspection of polling stations in Bermo block.

While reviewing attendance registers, classroom functioning and basic facilities, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with children seated on benches in the veranda and checked their notebooks. During the interaction, he noticed torn pages in the notebook of a young student, Suraj.

When gently asked about it, the child replied with innocence, “Sir, a rat ate my notebook.”

Moved by the situation, the Deputy Commissioner immediately directed Mukesh Machhua, Sub-Divisional Officer, Bermo, to arrange notebooks for all studying children without delay. Within minutes, copies were distributed among all ten students present. He also instructed officials to ensure school bags are provided so that study materials remain safe.

Expressing displeasure over the poor condition and irregular functioning of the school, he directed the Bermo BDO to temporarily shift classes to a nearby community centre. Further, District Education Officer Jagarnath Lohra was asked to immediately submit a proposal for repair of the school building to the district headquarters.

During his visit, the Deputy Commissioner also engaged children in a friendly interaction, asking general knowledge questions, including how many days February has. The children responded enthusiastically, reflecting their eagerness to learn despite limited resources.
