Ranchi: September 24 proved to be a historic day for the sanitation workers of Ranchi Municipal Corporation, when the administration finally adopted a positive stance on demands that had been pending for years. Sharing this success at a special meeting held at the CITU office in Dhurwa, the union leadership described it as a victory not only for sanitation workers but for the entire working class. The meeting was chaired by Comrade Bhavan Singh, President of Jharkhand Nagar Nikay Mazdoor Union. A large number of sanitation workers, drivers, helpers, and other corporation employees participated.
In a recent tripartite meeting held in the presence of the Deputy Labor Commissioner, the municipal corporation administration and the union reached consensus on several important issues, providing relief to the employees and setting an example for the labor movement in the state.
Agreements reached in the tripartite meeting:
All employees will receive 8 days of annual leave on festivals.
The path for promotion from unskilled to skilled category has been clarified.
Reinstatement of dismissed employees will be done.
Appointment will be given to dependents of deceased employees.
The backlog salary of 2013 for employees of A to Z company will be paid soon.
The arrears of salary increase effective from April 1, 2025, will be paid in three installments.
Identity cards will be issued to all corporation employees.
Union President Bhavan Singh said:
This is not merely an administrative agreement, but the result of the unity and struggle of the hardworking people. This victory inspires us that when we are organized, no government or system can ignore our demands."
He further added that recognizing the power of struggle is extremely important. The unity of labor organizations, honesty in leadership, and continuous grassroots-level struggle are the only ways to secure justice for any class. When policymakers are compelled to listen to the voice of laborers, only then does the possibility of systemic change arise.
At the meeting, union leader Prateek Mishra said:
"This achievement shows that no matter how many obstacles there are, if workers remain united, change is possible. This is just the beginning — we must also be prepared for demands related to bonuses, regularization, and other pending issues."
Discussion on future strategy:
At the meeting, the union’s General Secretary Comrade Prakash Toppo, Vice President Sukhnath Lohra, and Secretary Member Praful Linda shared the future strategy and appealed to all employees to stay united. They said this victory is not just for the sanitation workers of Jharkhand but for all hardworking people who sweat every day for a dignified life and their rights.
